L'Offrande du Coeur

This conversation is connected to L'Offrande du Coeur.

L'Offrande du cœur (The Offering of the Heart) is a wool and silk tapestry woven in Arras around 1400–1410. A man in a long red robe stands before a seated woman in blue, offering her a small red heart in his outstretched hand. She holds a bird, probably a falcon, on her left hand. A dog leaps up between them. Rabbits sit in the grass at their feet. The background is a dense millefleurs field — flowers, trees, and grasses woven in fine detail against a dark ground, filling every inch of space around the figures. The tapestry illustrates the conventions of courtly love — the formal, ritualized system of romantic devotion that structured aristocratic relationships in medieval France. The literal offering of the heart was a common motif in courtly literature and decorative art.
