Luncheon On The Grass

Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe is one of the most famous paintings of the nineteenth century. Manet showed it at the Salon des Refusés in 1863 after the official Salon rejected it, and it caused an immediate scandal — a nude woman sitting casually with two fully dressed men in contemporary clothing, looking directly out at the viewer. The composition is borrowed from a Renaissance engraving after Raphael, which made the painting's modernity even more pointed. The model for the nude was Victorine Meurent, who also posed for Olympia. A second woman wades in the background, and a still life of discarded clothing and a basket of fruit sits in the lower left corner. The painting is in the Musée d'Orsay.
