Marine
This conversation is connected to Marine.
Paul Sérusier painted Marine in 1889, signed in the lower right, the year after his transformative encounter with Gauguin at Pont-Aven. A sunset over the Breton coast is rendered in horizontal bands of color — ochre water, a strip of teal, a pink sun sitting low on the horizon, lavender and green clouds above, with teal brushstrokes catching light on the water's surface. A rocky outcrop sits in the lower right. The painting has the simplified, flattened quality that Gauguin encouraged in the young Sérusier, who brought these ideas back to Paris and co-founded the Nabis — "prophets" in Hebrew — with Denis, Bonnard, and Vuillard.
