Marine (1924)

This conversation is connected to Marine (1924).

A wide beach at low tide, painted almost monotone in browns. The wet sand fills the lower two-thirds of the canvas in broad, horizontal bands of rust, sienna, and dark umber, with a thin line of white surf breaking at the waterline. The sea beyond is a dark strip, and above it a narrow band of pale silver light separates the water from a sky of blue, cream, and brown-pink clouds. The painting is built on horizontals, the color moving in layers from warm sand to dark water to bright horizon to clouded sky. Spilliaert was a Belgian Symbolist painter from Ostend who spent his life painting the North Sea coast, often at night or in low light. His beach and marine paintings strip the landscape down to geometry and tone, closer in spirit to Rothko than to Impressionism.
