Maryino — Birch Trees

This conversation is connected to Maryino — Birch Trees.

Ciągliński painted this birch grove at Maryino in 1889, relatively early in his career. Thin gray trunks rise vertically through a muted field of greens, ochres, and pale blues, with patches of sky visible between the trees in the background. The paint is thin and the canvas weave shows through in places, giving the whole image a dry, quiet quality. A red stamp or seal is visible in the upper left corner.
