Matin de Pâques, aux grands arbres
This conversation is connected to Matin de Pâques, aux grands arbres.
Set in a softly glowing, ethereal woodland, this modern interpretation of the Noli me tangere story depicts a haloed, white-robed Christ appearing to a kneeling Mary Magdalene. The figures are dwarfed by a towering tree on the right, bursting with thick, textured pale pink blossoms. To the left, a cluster of slender, bright yellow-green trunks rises in front of a dark stone tomb. Denis was a deeply devout Catholic who sought to rejuvenate religious iconography in the modern era. By placing sacred narratives within the lush, decorative landscapes of his native France, he created intimate visions of faith defined by spiritual light and rhythmic, simplified forms. Oil on canvas.
