Meeresstrand im Nebel

This conversation is connected to Meeresstrand im Nebel.

A rocky shore disappears into fog, brown and dark red boulders are scattered across the foreground, solid and detailed, while behind them the scene dissolves. Two sailing vessels sit in the middle distance, barely visible, their masts and rigging drawn as faint gray lines against a pale blue-green haze. The fog swallows the horizon entirely. The upper two-thirds of the painting is almost empty, a field of cool gray-blue light with the faintest warm glow where the sun might be. Friedrich was the defining painter of German Romanticism, and his landscapes treat nature as a spiritual condition.
