Morning on the Seine near Giverny

This conversation is connected to Morning on the Seine near Giverny.

Monet painted Morning on the Seine near Giverny in 1897, as part of a series of about eighteen canvases showing the same stretch of river at different times of morning. He would get up before dawn, row out to the spot, and work on multiple canvases in sequence as the light changed — sometimes having as many as fourteen in progress at once. Dense foliage presses in from both banks, reflected in still water, with a band of pale pink-gold sky visible through the gap. The whole surface is worked in short, layered strokes of blue, green, purple, and lavender, so thickly built up that the trees and their reflections nearly merge into a single field of color.
