Nacktes Mädchen auf Diwan

This conversation is connected to Nacktes Mädchen auf Diwan.

Kirchner painted Nacktes Mädchen auf Diwan in 1924, during his years in Davos. A nude woman reclines on a divan surrounded by patterned textiles in saturated pinks, reds, greens, blues, and purples, with a second figure visible in the background and a bowl of fruit in the lower right. The color is at full volume — Kirchner's Davos palette was even more intense than his Berlin years. He'd been living in Switzerland since 1918 after a breakdown during WWI, and by the mid-1920s was painting with a confidence and chromatic boldness that pushed his Expressionism into something closer to Matisse's decorative interiors. Kirchner co-founded Die Brücke in 1905 and remained its central figure until the group dissolved in 1913.
