Nénuphars

This conversation is connected to Nénuphars.

A single pink water lily bloom sits at center, its petals splayed open against a ground of olive green and pale gray-blue ripples. Two golden-yellow lily pads flank it at the lower left and right. The forms are strongly outlined and completely flat — no shading, no depth, no reflection. The water is rendered as a pattern of interlocking curved shapes in olive and off-white. This is a decorative design, likely a study for tapestry or upholstery — Ranson worked extensively in textile design with his wife Marie-France, and a water lily upholstery design from the same period is in the Budapest Museum of Applied Arts. Ranson was a founding member of Les Nabis and the most committed to decorative and applied art within the group.
