Nudes

This conversation is connected to Nudes.

Watercolor and ink on paper showing two nude women outdoors, with one seated with her back to the viewer, the other reclining and facing forward. The figures are outlined in bold black ink with broad washes of blue, yellow, orange, pink, and green filling the bodies and the surrounding landscape. A dark tree trunk and canopy of black foliage frame the upper portion. The drawing is rapid and confident, with the paper left bare in places and the watercolor bleeding freely beyond the ink outlines. This is Fauvist figure painting: Matisse's influence is obvious in the heavy outlines and the flat, saturated color. Saÿen was in Matisse's first formal class in Paris in 1907–08 and spent eight years in the city before World War I forced him back to Philadelphia.
