Odpočinok

This conversation is connected to Odpočinok.

Weisz-Kubínčan painted Odpočinok — "Rest" in Slovak — in 1940, two years before he was forced into hiding. Figures rest among mountains under a swirling red-orange sun, the entire composition painted in thick, urgent strokes of red, pink, blue, ochre, and teal. The landscape is fractured and churning, the sky as agitated as the ground. Weisz-Kubínčan had been baptized that same year — an attempt to avoid persecution that ultimately failed. By 1942 he was in the mountains, and by 1945 he was dead. The painting was among the nearly 300 works he packed into a suitcase and left with a friend before fleeing.
