On the Heights
This conversation is connected to On the Heights.
On the Heights is oil on canvas mounted to board, and it's one of Davies's larger pastorals. A steep rocky hillside rises at the left, dotted with dark green foliage, while the right side of the composition opens into a wide blue sky filled with white and gray clouds. Goats are scattered across the foreground — one white goat stands on the rocks at the left, others are visible along the ridge with what appears to be a standing figure among them. Tall, thin trees with orange-gold foliage rise from the cliff edge against the sky. The palette is dominated by that particular blue — a clear, high-altitude blue that takes up most of the canvas — broken by the warm ochres and coppers of the trees and stone.
