Paysage de l'Île-de-France

This conversation is connected to Paysage de l'Île-de-France.

A wide, flat landscape with fields in bands of red-orange, green, lavender, and blue stretch to a low horizon, with dark trees scattered across the middle ground and a row of pale poplars at the distance. The sky is heavy with gray and white clouds over a strip of blue hills. Bare-branched trees stand in the foreground at the left. The paint is thick and applied in broad, directional strokes, the color high-keyed and unblended. Derain co-founded Fauvism with Matisse at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, and this Île-de-France landscape has the saturated, unmodulated color of his Fauvist work — the red-orange fields in particular are pushed well beyond observation.
