Resting Farmers (1930–1940)

This conversation is connected to Resting Farmers (1930–1940).

Weisz-Kubínčan painted Resting Farmers sometime between 1930 and 1940, during the years he was living in central Slovakia. A farmer sits against the ground beside a horse, with mountains, trees, and a swirling sun filling the background in dense, churning brushwork of teal, blue-gray, green, pink, and brown. The landscape is as agitated as the sky — every surface is in motion, the mountains bending and the trees twisting. Weisz-Kubínčan painted Slovak rural life repeatedly, but his version of it has none of the pastoral calm the subject usually carries. He studied in Berlin where he absorbed German Expressionism directly, and that energy stayed in his work for the rest of his life.
