Roses

This conversation is connected to Roses.

Van Gogh painted Roses in May 1890, during his last weeks at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He made several flower paintings in quick succession during this period, working fast and on a large scale. The brushstrokes are thick and urgent, pressing petals and leaves into a dense weave of greens and pale whites — flower and foliage given the same restless energy. The blooms push forward from the surrounding tangle, half-emerging, crowding the surface of the canvas.
