Sketch for a painting

Jan Ciągliński was a Polish-Lithuanian painter who spent much of his career teaching at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. This is a preparatory sketch for a larger work, and it has the looseness that comes with that — pale figures drift in a circle around the faint silhouette of the Venus de Milo, their bodies barely separating from the surrounding wash of color and light. Arms dissolve into atmosphere, faces blur into gesture. It reads more as a study of movement than of the statue.
