Storm Clouds

This conversation is connected to Storm Clouds.

A curving beach under a gray sky, painted quickly and loosely. Pale sand and scrubby green grass slope down to dark teal water at the right, with a distant shoreline and white sailboats visible across the bay. The clouds are gray and restless, painted in broad, thinly applied strokes, and the whole surface has the quality of a study done on the spot. Twachtman was an American Impressionist who studied in Munich and Paris before becoming a leading figure in American landscape painting. His early work, like this, has a tonal, Munich-school quality, grayer and more atmospheric than the bright Connecticut landscapes he's best known for.
