Storm Sea

This conversation is connected to Storm Sea.

Surf crashes against dark rock in a wall of emerald green and white. The paint is thick and fast, laid on with a loaded brush in broad, sweeping strokes that follow the curve of the waves. A dark headland rises at the upper left, its mass painted in near-black greens, and the sea beyond is deep teal under a gray sky. The painting is built on two colors: the dark green of the deep water and the pale green-white of the foam where the wave breaks. Bellows was a student of Robert Henri and a central figure in the Ashcan School, best known for his boxing paintings and New York street scenes. His coastal paintings, mostly done at Monhegan Island in Maine, are rawer and more physical, the paint as agitated as the water.
