A gathering of nude figures is dispersed throughout a structured, rhythmic woodland setting. The scene is characterized by distinct, geometric faceting—a clear departure from the artist's earlier romanticism. The pale, elongated figures and the surrounding trees, sky, and distant mountains are broken into flat, interlocking planes of yellow, blue, and green. Following his instrumental role in organizing the 1913 Armory Show, which introduced European avant-garde art to America, Davies briefly integrated elements of Cubism and Orphism into his work. This piece demonstrates his attempt to merge his signature classical subjects with the fractured, analytical framework of modernism.
