The Blue Window
This conversation is connected to The Blue Window.
A windowsill arranged with objects set against an open window looking out onto rounded blue tree forms and a pale oval moon or cloud. The whole painting is suffused with blue — the walls, the windowsill, the sky, the trees — in varying values from pale cerulean to deep cobalt, with the objects on the sill providing the only breaks in warm color: the ochre-yellow bust, the green lamp shade, the red flower. Matisse painted this at his studio in Issy-les-Moulineaux, outside Paris. The original painting is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it has been since 1939.
