The Garden II
This conversation is connected to The Garden II.
A narrow dirt path bisects a dense, overgrown garden, leading the eye vertically through the composition. The space is crowded with an overwhelming variety of plant life, rendered in a bright, patterned palette of pale yellow, varied greens, and muted purples. Two small, dark birds rest on the path near the center. A dark, rectangular shape—possibly a doorway or trellis—stands in the midground, partially obscured by the foliage. Bonnard frequently painted the gardens surrounding his homes in Vernon and Le Cannet. By filling the canvas to the edges with interlocking, colorful brushmarks, he creates a flattened, highly decorative space that immerses the viewer directly into the overgrown environment.
