The Gathering
This conversation is connected to The Gathering.
A hazy, dreamlike gathering takes place in a springtime garden. Ghostly figures dressed in flowing white robes cluster around a central stone pedestal or monument. The scene is framed by slender, dark tree trunks supporting a canopy of pale yellow and white blossoms against a streaked sky of violet, pink, and blue. Denis applies the paint with soft, chalky, almost powdery brushstrokes, dissolving the solid forms into a tapestry of atmospheric light and color. The frequent inclusion of women in white within his work reflects his deep interest in themes of purity, communion, and spiritual mystery. Oil on canvas.
