The Machair Bay, Iona
This conversation is connected to The Machair Bay, Iona.
The Machair on Iona, painted in flat, confident strokes of lavender, pink, brown, teal, and bright green. The sandy beach in the foreground is a patchwork of pale pink and cream with brown shadows, leading to bands of dark rock, turquoise tidal pools, and pink-and-green headlands in the middle distance. A strip of deep blue sea separates the rocky shore from a green hill on the far island. The color is high and unexpected, with the lavender sand and teal water pushing the landscape into something more vivid than observation alone would produce. Cadell was one of the four Scottish Colourists, along with Peploe, Hunter, and Fergusson, and he painted on Iona often from 1912 onward.
