The November Meteors (1882)

Étienne Léopold Trouvelot was a French astronomer and artist working in the 1870s and 80s, when photography still couldn't capture what the eye could see at night. He made his astronomical prints by hand from pastels, translating hours of observation at the Harvard College Observatory into chromolithographs published in 1882. In this one, streaks of light cut across a deep luminous blue, dozens of them, building into a sky that feels genuinely full.
