The Sea
This conversation is connected to The Sea.
Open ocean under a dark sky. A full-rigged ship sits far off at center left, its sails and masts ghostly in the murk, half-dissolved in rain and spray. The sea is a vast, rolling surface of dark blue-black and gray-green, the swells long and heavy, with a few white gulls low on the water at the lower right. The sky and sea are nearly the same tone, the horizon barely legible. Moran was a British-born American painter who specialized in marine subjects, part of a family of artists that included his brothers Thomas and Peter. His storm paintings owe a clear debt to Turner, and this one shares Turner's interest in reducing a seascape to atmosphere and light.
