Tranquility

A highly reductive, almost abstract landscape composed entirely of soft, horizontal bands of color. Muted tones of pale grey, sandy ochre, and soft blue blend seamlessly into one another, removing any sharp distinction between land, water, and sky. A few darker, blurred marks indicate shallow pools or distant landforms. Clarice Beckett, a leading figure of Australian Tonalism, was known for painting outdoors during the early morning or late evening when the light was softest. In this piece, she strips away all topographical detail, relying solely on subtle tonal shifts to document the heavy, still atmosphere of the coast.
