Tulpen
This conversation is connected to Tulpen.
Rohlfs painted Tulpen between 1913 and 1915, signed with his initials in the lower right. Red tulip blooms emerge from a dense tangle of green, purple, and blue brushwork, the flowers barely distinguishable from the foliage around them. Rohlfs had begun painting as a teenager after falling from a tree — his doctor gave him drawing materials during a two-year convalescence that ended with the amputation of his right leg. He didn't find his way to Expressionism until 1901, when a collector offered him a studio in the Folkwang Museum in Hagen and he encountered Van Gogh's work for the first time.
