Two Nudes in a Room

This conversation is connected to Two Nudes in a Room.

Kirchner painted Two Nudes in a Room in 1914, signed and dated in the upper left. Two women stand in an interior crowded with color — a zigzag-patterned wall hanging in yellow and pink, a dark blue cat curled on a chair, a potted plant, a patterned rug. The figures are painted in pale pink with angular contours, characteristic of Kirchner's Berlin period. This was painted the same year WWI began, and the last year before Kirchner's breakdown. He volunteered for service and was discharged within months, physically and mentally shattered. The Berlin interiors from 1913–1914 are considered among his strongest work.
