Undergrowth

A woodland scene organized around a strong diagonal composition. A flat, reddish-brown path anchors the lower right, guiding the eye toward a dense grove of slender trees. In the midground, a simple wooden railing or bridge spans a darkly shadowed, textured hollow. The foliage is painted with loose, visible brushstrokes in varying shades of green, interrupted by quick, pale dabs that indicate light piercing the canopy. Created between 1902 and 1903, this piece captures a critical transitional moment in Matisse's early career. While he still utilizes a relatively naturalistic palette of earth tones and forest greens, his reliance on structural brushmarks rather than blended gradients points directly toward the reductive color blocking that would soon define his Fauvist work.
