Untitled (c. 1938)

This untitled work dates from around 1938, during Klee's late period in Bern. Thick black lines cross and branch against blocks of blue, white, and pink-beige, with pale circles scattered throughout. The composition has the quality of a diagram or a map — branches, intersections, nodes — without resolving into anything legible. Klee's late work moved increasingly toward this kind of bold, simplified mark-making, the fine detail of his Bauhaus years giving way to heavy lines and flat fields of color. He was ill with scleroderma and working at enormous speed, producing over a thousand pieces in 1939 alone.
