Venus of Kirkcudbright
This conversation is connected to Venus of Kirkcudbright.
A large female nude sits frontally, one hand raised holding a biomorphic shape on a stick. To her left, a smaller, more abstract figure stands with a dark bottle-shaped body and olive-green limbs. The nude's face is round, calm, and mask-like, with dark eyes and a small mouth. Her body is rendered in warm ochre and brown tones with visible brushwork and a dry, textured surface. The background is divided into horizontal bands of gray, mauve, rust, and brown. Adler painted this during his time at the artists' colony in Kirkcudbright, in southwest Scotland, where he'd settled after being discharged from the Polish army on medical grounds in 1941. The title is his, Venus of Kirkcudbright, the classical goddess transplanted to a small Scottish town.
