Vier Akte unter Bäumen

This conversation is connected to Vier Akte unter Bäumen.

Kirchner painted Vier Akte unter Bäumen (Four Nudes Under Trees) during the years when Die Brücke members would spend summers together at the Moritzburg lakes near Dresden, painting each other nude in the landscape. Four figures stand among trees — one in a pointed hat smoking a pipe, another draped in a cloth, a third with red hair, a fourth seated at the left in pink. The bodies are painted in warm yellows and oranges against a deep green and blue forest. These outdoor nude sessions were central to Die Brücke's identity — they saw stripping down and painting in nature as a rejection of bourgeois culture and academic art. Kirchner co-founded the group in 1905 in what had been a butcher's shop.
