Vierge et Enfant sur Fond Étoilé
This conversation is connected to Vierge et Enfant sur Fond Étoilé.
Matisse made Vierge et Enfant sur Fond Étoilé ("Virgin and Child on a Starry Background") as a lithograph, signed and numbered in pencil at the bottom. A woman holds an infant against a field of stars, the entire composition drawn in a single continuous line with the economy that defined Matisse's late graphic work. He produced this during the period when he was also designing the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, the Dominican chapel in the south of France that became his final major project. Matisse spent the last years of his life increasingly devoted to religious subjects and to the reduction of form to its absolute essentials — a line, a shape, a star.
