View of the Vineyard Sovkhoz

Lola Liivat painted View of the Vineyard Sovkhoz during the Soviet period, when she was among the few Estonian painters pursuing a more expressive, color-driven approach despite official pressure toward Socialist Realism. The subject is a state collective farm set into a mountain landscape — long white buildings running in a horizontal line across the middle ground, with a small teal-roofed structure in the foreground. The mountains behind them are deep violet and blue-black, the sky a high-key mixture of pink, white, and rust, and the valley floor burns orange and gold. The brushwork is fast and loaded throughout.
