Village Church

This conversation is connected to Village Church.

A white village church with a steep brown roof and a small bell tower sits behind a low whitewashed wall with three rounded gate pillars. Stone steps lead up through the gate to a green churchyard with small dark crosses. A bare tree with a dark trunk leans over the scene from the left. A brown dirt road curves past the wall to the right, where a smaller building with a smoking chimney is visible against a teal-blue sky. The palette is muted and cool in white, brown, dark green, and teal with a single patch of rust-red foliage at the far left. The composition is still and quiet, the paint applied flatly with visible brushwork but no atmospheric effects. Laermans was a Belgian painter who went deaf from meningitis at eleven. He studied at the Académie Royale in Brussels and spent most of his career painting the rural working poor of Brabant in a simplified, Bruegel-influenced style.
