Weißes Zeichen auf Hellgrün
This conversation is connected to Weißes Zeichen auf Hellgrün.
Weißes Zeichen auf Hellgrün (White Sign on Light Green) is oil on canvas, 1940, signed and dated lower right. White geometric forms — an arrow-like shape, a circle, a horizontal bar, a small rectangle, and a wedge — are arranged against a muted yellow-green ground, with a band of teal-green running horizontally through the middle. The white shapes have a chalky, matte surface with visible texture, and the green ground shows dry, brushy paint. In the upper portion, faint comb-like marks are visible beneath the surface, traces of an earlier composition that Baumeister painted over. This is from the early phase of a series he called Ideogramme und Zeichen (Ideograms and Signs) in which he reduced his visual language to simple, symbol-like forms. Baumeister studied at the Stuttgart Academy under Adolf Hölzel, alongside Oskar Schlemmer. After 1945 he became one of the central figures of abstract art in Germany and co-founded the group ZEN 49.
