Westfälische Landschaft
This conversation is connected to Westfälische Landschaft.
Christian Rohlfs didn't become an Expressionist until he was in his fifties. He'd spent thirty years painting academic landscapes at the Weimar Academy before moving to Hagen in 1901, where encounters with Van Gogh, Munch, and Nolde transformed his work. Westfälische Landschaft is a Westphalian landscape reduced to ribbons of blue and green with patches of warm ochre showing through, the trees and terrain dissolved into color. Rohlfs signed his work with his initials "CR." In 1937 the Nazis expelled him from the Prussian Academy, declared his work degenerate, and seized 412 pieces from public collections. He died the next year in Hagen.
