White Cow

This conversation is connected to White Cow.

Sérusier painted White Cow around 1895, signed with his initials in the lower left. A white cow with black spots grazes in a bright green field beside a blossoming tree with a dark, twisting trunk — probably an apple tree in spring. The sky is a flat, saturated teal. Sérusier spent most of the 1890s living in small Breton villages, painting the landscape and the people with the same approach he'd learned from Gauguin: firm outlines, blocks of unmodulated color, and a deliberate flatness influenced by Japanese prints. He was the founder of the Nabis and the person most responsible for transmitting Gauguin's ideas to the next generation of Parisian painters.
