Yellow Tree

This conversation is connected to Yellow Tree.

The composition is bathed in a soft, monochromatic golden light that flattens traditional spatial depth. A thick, textured yellow tree trunk anchors the left side of the canvas, its branches reaching outward across the upper register. The surrounding space is filled with a rhythm of stylized, floating botanical motifs—scattered leaves, floating blossoms, and abstract organic forms in contrasting touches of violet, deep red, and opaque white. The French Symbolist Odilon Redon created this piece between 1900 and 1901 as part of a major commission of fifteen decorative panels for the dining room of Baron Robert de Domecy in Burgundy. Moving away from the dark charcoals of his early career, Redon combined multiple media here to achieve a matte, tapestry-like surface, merging observed botany with a highly decorative, dreamlike abstraction.
