For centuries, blue was the most coveted pigment in Western art. Ultramarine, made from lapis lazuli imported from Afghanistan, cost more than gold and was reserved for the most important details—most often the Virgin Mary’s robes. The invention of synthetic ultramarine in 1826 changed that almost overnight.
