Purple was restricted by sumptuary law in ancient Rome — only the emperor could wear Tyrian purple, extracted at enormous cost from murex sea snails. The color carried that association with power and rarity through Byzantine mosaics, medieval manuscripts, and into Baroque painting. It never fully shed the connotation of being above your station.
